Photography Killed the Photographer

I used to take a lot of photos. Also, I used to enjoy taking lots of photos. Over the last couple of years, however, I have taken very few non-travel photos. I’d like to get back into the groove, but I don’t know how. I feel that the various photography projects I did a few years ago were instrumental in the malaise I’ve experienced.

I miss it but at the same time I’m unmotivated.

Couch to 10K… eventually….

Over the last year or two, I’ve been starting and stopping a Couch-to-10K training schedule. The reasons I end up stopping are varied and not the point of this post. How to start-up again is the question.

I’ve tried several methods, including ignoring a short hiatus and starting from scratch. Neither of those has been satisfying and I’m trying to find a better alternative.

This particular instance saw me get through Week 5, Day 1 of the 3-day-a-week, 13 week program, followed by a non-training 5K run and then what looks likely to be a two week break. Continuing to Week 5, Day 2 doesn’t seem like a good idea and I certainly don’t look forward to restarting the whole program.

Perhaps a good rule of thumb would be to backtrack the same number of days that I’ve skipped. Hmm… that actually sounds like a reasonable plan, so that’s probably what I’ll end up doing. Next week.

Perfect Swim Workout

Nitro SwimWell, perfect for me.

I mentioned this morning (on Twitter and Facebook) that today’s swim workout was good and attributed it to the “perfect motivation setup”. Admittedly, an awkward wording at best. What I meant was that the prepared workout was perfect for motivating me to swim a further than I normally would.

Often, when the workout is longer than I want to swim I find some portions of it that I don’t particularly care for and shorten or eliminate them. Unfortunately, I tend to end up with a shorter swim than I’d like when I do that. There’s some psychology involved there that I won’t explore at this time.

So, what made this workout different?

First, it was 2600 meters, which stretches my vague 2200-2400 goal just a bit without being overwhelming. This is particularly significant since I often end up stopping at 2000 meters when I the workout seems too long (2800 meters, for example).

Equally important, however, was that the workout just didn’t offer me any obvious places to make cuts. Here’s the workout:

Warm-up: 200 meter swim, 200 meter kick w/ fins, 200 meter pull w/ paddles [600]
Transition: 4 x 50 meter swim (gradually faster) [+ 200 = 800]
Main Set x 2: [+ 900 x 2 = 2600]
200 meter swim
400 meter kick w/ fins
2 x 50 meter swim (sprint)
200 meter pull w/ paddles

This particular warm-up is my favorite, so I wasn’t going to cut that. Cutting a full iteration of the main set would be too big a cut (cutting an iteration like that is often what I do). Cutting any of the 50 meter swim sets just seemed silly as the number of reps was small. I like the pull w/ paddles sets. That really left the 400 meter kick as only viable choice, and it’s actually a pretty good one as I could just shorten it. But it’s also pretty much the easiest portion of the entire set.

End result?

I swam the full 2600 meters. This isn’t a grand accomplishment, but it’s further than I’ve been swimming lately. A minor down side is that combined with yesterday’s first run in several months, my legs are pretty tight this afternoon. I wonder how tomorrow’s run will go?

Full disclosure: The workout actually included an unspecified cool-down. I chose a 0 meter cool-down. :-)

Iron Fence

Over the past month-and-a-half or so, we’ve had the front-facing section of our fence replaced by a custom-built iron fence. We’re very happy with the result, though I haven’t fully reconciled myself with how much we paid for it. I’ll get over it eventually, and I do really like it. It took longer than anticipated due to an issue with it being built too tall originally, but that all finally got worked out.

Here is a gallery of various stages of construction, which you may have to click through to my cite to actually see:

Shoes

20110518-102052.jpg20110518-102042.jpgHow many pairs of shoes do you have?

I think I have more than average, at least for a guy. Notably, most of them didn’t cost very much, so it’s not like I have thousands of dollars invested in shoes. Even so, quantity must count for something. :-)

The first picture is of the recently acquired shoe storage hanging on the back of our closet door. Prior to this, some of these were simply piled in a corner of the closet and the rest were stuffed into the shoe storage in the second picture.

In addition to the shoes pictured here, I also have Crocks, golf shoes, golf sandals, water shoes, biking sandals and the high-tops I wear for racquetball. I think there’s also a pair of flip-flops in the truck, but I can’t stand the part that goes between my toes, so I’m not sure why I still have those. And ski boots — how could I forget the ski boots?!

To be fair, one pair of hiking/snow boots are a bit small and I bought another pair to replace them. I haven’t gotten rid of the old ones because they are in such good shape. For that matter, I still have the boots I wore before those. I should probably take both of those to Goodwill.

Oh, I also bought another pair of shoes after taking these pictures.

My Second Hybrid

I never got around to writing a post about the Toyota Prius that I purchased last October. Perhaps I will do so eventually. Now, however, I am writing about a different sort of hybrid. Unfortunately, it’s probably a much less interesting type. It’s a hybrid laptop hard drive, which amounts to a normal laptop hard drive with a bit of SSD thrown in for performance advantages. Wow, I’m already bored with this topic just writing it, so if you want the details, have a look at what Wayne wrote about it earlier this year.

The primary differences between my story and Wayne’s are:

  • I only paid $100 for the drive. (Score!)
  • I put it in my MacBook Pro rather than a Windows system. (Duh!)
  • I did absolutely no performance testing. (Um…)

As you may or may not know, the hard drive in a MacBook Pro is not considered an upgradeable part by Apple, and certainly not a user-serviceable part. The procedure for disassembling and reassembling the laptop is far from trivial, though certainly not brain surgery. Using thorough instructions obtained from the Internet a very special resource I use, it took me about 40 minutes to perform the procedure.

Wow, I ended up writing about it again. I thought I was done with that. On a more interesting note, here’s a picture of my first hybrid:And, just for the heck of it, here’s a graph of my mileage so far (courtesy of the Road Trip App on my iPhone):

white - MPG, blue - average MPG, yellow - gas price

The low outlier is, I think, a result of either a heavy headwind or some bad gas, or both.

Found It!

Canon 17-40L

Just in time to take my friend Travis’ family Christmas photo, I found my missing lens! It was actually in one of my camera bags, though in a pocket that I never use for lenses. Still, I thought I had checked all of the pockets. Obviously not! :-)

Glad to have it back!

The Beatles

I’ve never been a Beatles fanatic. I like a lot of their music, but I’ve never owned a single track. I’m not completely sure why this is, though I could go into each music-buying phase of my life and come up with reasons. Lately, the biggest reason is that I primarily purchase individual tracks and The Beatles weren’t sold that way. Until now.

As is presumably widely known, as of this past Tuesday, The Beatles has come to iTunes. I was happy that this had finely happened as I’ve been paying attention during the long process that led up to this moment. When The Beatles Box Set came out last September, I had fully expected it to be on iTunes as well. I was disappointed when that didn’t happen. Now, 14 months later, it has.

While I was tempted to purchase the box set last year, or at least put it on my wish list, the value just wasn’t strong enough for me. I really wanted to be able to pick-and-choose the songs I wanted. Now that I have that option, it’s somewhat comical how tempted I was to simply click the “BUY ALBUM” button for the entire box set. I resisted this impulse and I’m glad I did. It turns out that it would have been a mistake for several reasons.

First, it’s overpriced. The physical version, which has the technical advantage of higher quality (though I doubt I’d ever notice) along with the ease of having backups for the ripped music rather than having to burn backups of the downloaded music, is $20 cheaper.

Second, the mono versions of the songs are not included in the iTunes box set. In fact, they aren’t available at all on iTunes. I’m not going to go into the details, but many people strongly prefer the mono versions of the early Beatles songs over the stereo versions.

Third, and perhaps most significant, is that the whole reason I was waiting for The Beatles to be available digitally was so that I could buy just the songs I wanted. To give up that flexibility on impulse would be silly.

So, now what? Many readers may not be surprised that the answer involves a spreadsheet. I went through the entire song listing for the box set, by album, and rated each track as either “Yes”, “Maybe”, “Meh”, “No” or “Dup”. “Yes” means that I’d buy the song for iTunes $1.29 price. “Maybe” means that I wouldn’t buy the individual song, but I’d appreciate it on an album. “Meh” means that I don’t really care, but there is some chance that getting the song on an album and listening to it repeatedly would result in it growing on me. “No” is obvious and “Dup” means that the song was on an earlier album in what I think is a mostly similar version.

Building this spreadsheet took a while as it included listening to at least some portion of the 30-second preview for a majority of the songs. But it’s done. The rest is just math. Here’s the data:

Album Yes Maybe Meh No Dup
Magical Mystery Tour 7 2 2

Let It Be 5 5 2

A Hard Day’s Night 5 6 2

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 11 2

Yellow Submarine
3 8
2
Beatles For Sale 2 6 6

Help! 5 8 1

Please Please Me 6 2 5 1
Revolver 4 6 3 1
Rubber Soul 8 3 3

With The Beatles 4 7 3

Abbey Road 9 5 3

The Beatles (White Album) 5 15 10

Past Masters 9 14 5
5

The first thing that jumps out at me is that I clearly have a bias in favor of Sgt. Pepper. I have a theory that my father played this album a lot when I was at a particular age. Now, at $1.29 per “Yes” song and half price per “Maybe” song, the only albums that are definitely worth (to me) their (iTunes) cost are Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road, with Rubber Soul being “close enough”. On the other hand, the entire collection comes close to being worthwhile. Switch to the $130 physical media price and it’s a done deal.

Except…

There’s still the issue of mono versus stereo. Investigating the mono version of the box set a bit further and it turns out that it doesn’t include Abbey Road or Let It Be. Instead, it includes both mono and stereo versions of Help! and Rubber Soul. I find this a bit odd, but what can you do? (Note that it’s also missing Yellow Submarine, though all of the songs are actually present on other albums, just not the musical score from the movie.)

Taking away my computed value of Abbey Road and Let It Be leaves the total just $13.50 short of Amazon’s price for the mono box set. Close enough, particularly including the fact that the mono versions aren’t available individually.

That’s it, then. Get the mono box set, plus Abbey Road, plus the 5 Let It Be songs I want. For the supremely curious, the 5 “Maybe” songs on Let It Be that I’ll be missing out on in order to save $6.54 are Two of Us, Dig a Pony, Maggie Mae, I’ve Got a Feeling, and For You Blue.

Of course, I really feel like I should leave the mono box set on my wish list until after Christmas. So, for now, I guess I’ll just buy Abbey Road for now. Oh, wait… would you look at that. Abbey Road and Let It Be are both available on Amazon for $7.99. That makes Let It Be worthwhile. I guess it’s Amazon all the way.

Thanks for nothing, Apple.

50 miles!

As of today’s swim, I have now swum 50 miles (50.77, actually) since I started with the Master Swim program at the beginning of August.

I really need to enter some triathlons next year. I did a few mini-triathlons a few years ago, but have only really done biking events for the last few years. Of course, I’ll need to get more serious about my running if I plan to do more triathlons.

Speaking of biking, Marci and I did the Wurst Ride this past weekend:

For this ride, we usually have my parents bring our kids down to Wurst Fest after the ride and get a ride back to the start with them. This year, however, we had other plans for the evening so we needed an alternate way back to the truck. I eventually realized that the short portion of the ride that we were doing was short enough that riding back to the truck was only a small stretch for me and I decided to do it. Marci rode back part of the way and I picked her up at the last/first rest stop. It worked out well.

I did another ride back at the beginning of October with Travis and his son:

Now it’s becoming winter, so nothing more ’til spring, probably.
