The Rumors…

…of my blog’s death were exaggerated. A little bit. Maybe. If anyone actually tried to access it in the last week or so that it’s been offline.

We’ve been having intermittent trouble with our Internet access, but it’s been up most of the time. However, coincident with one of the outages, my Linux server seems to have lost its ability to communicate on the network. I fought with it for a while from a software perspective and pretty much determined that there was a good chance that it was a hardware problem.

Rather than chase the problem further, I’ve decide to simply move everything to my iMac and get rid of the Linux box. Marci wants to get rid of the old Windows box as well, which is probably a good idea as I don’t think it’s even working at present and sits unused. Santa brought Brittney a MacBook Air for Christmas (I don’t know what dirt she has on him; I should grill her about that.), so we now have three Macs. Since Marci pretty much uses her work laptop for everything, that will still leave enough computers for everyone.

Moving the blog over was fairly painless once I realized that my IP address had changed and I needed to get the DNS settings updated. It seems like everything is working pretty well. I have yet to move the other web services over, most notably my photo albums. Since the Linux box has no network access, moving data requires an external drive and I don’t have one large enough (and available) to move all of the images at once. Besides, I already have all of the originals in Aperture on the Mac, so I may just re-export the entire library. Or something.

Texas Independence Day

174 years ago, Texas declared independence from Mexico. If you’re curious about it, I found this to be an interesting read.

Totally Unrelated AsideLast month marked the 5-year anniversary of my blog and, just like last year, I completely missed it. Anyway, Happy Blogiversary to me! :-)

(OK, so perhaps not totally unrelated, as they’re both anniversaries.)

Well Hello There!

You don’t have to tell me twice. OK, maybe twice, but that’s all!

Delurk and say “Hi”, won’t you?

A Year in Photos

Today marks the completion of a full year of pictures on Glass Renagerie, my photoblog. What a year it has been. I’m happy to be at the end of it, because it ended up being more stressful than I had expected. From the beginning, I didn’t require myself to actually take a picture each day, so I figured it wouldn’t be a problem coming up with pictures from my archives. However, a quick scan shows that a large majority of the images were taken in 2009:

2000 – 1 (In Rememberance, for 9/11)
2002 – 3 (A few shots from our Hawaii trip of that year)
2006 – 1 (Today’s UT Tower image)
2007 – 11 (Some from my Australia trip and a few others)
2008 – 12 (various)
2009 – 333 (see what I mean?)
2010 – 4 (likewise)

This is probably a significant source of the stress I’ve felt with coming up with an image for each day, so now that I’ve completed a full year, I’m going to back off and just post images there haphazardly. After all, I still have Macro Monday and the new Diptych project.

Here is some more information about the year’s worth of photos. Trusting my tags, which probably aren’t completely consistent, my most popular subjects are:

Flowers – 66
Clouds – 41
Sky – 19
Sunset – 17
Bird – 15
Food – 13
Building – 13
Tree – 11
Waterfall – 11
Water – 10

Just for fun, here’s a clickable montage of the entire set: (due to some technical difficulties combined with having already spent way too much time on this, there may be a few that do not link correctly)

Vegas Trip in Pictures

I actually wrote up part of a trip description, but I just didn’t like it. So I’ve decided to just post a picture summary — which morphed into a Flickr set.

Avitaween

As I previously alluded to, I traveled to Orlando last weekend to attend Avitaween. And while that was certainly the main event, it was far from the whole story. It was, in fact, one of nine meet-ups for me during the trip.

First up was lunch at the Orlando airport with several others that were arriving at around the same time. These were all people I hadn’t meet before and we coordinated via Twitter. Kim was already there when we got there and later, Sheila, Employee3699 and her fraughter joined us. Chick-Fil-A was the fare of choice, apparently being unavailable in the far-off land of Chicago. Or something like that. Then it was time to wait over an hour in the Budget car rental line. Joy. That was probably the only negative of my whole weekend, at least the only one that directly affected me.

Friday evening was the occasion of a wonderful dinner hosted by Faiqa and Tariq. In attendance were several bloggers I’d already met and was thrilled to see again: Poppy & Dawg, Rachel, Robin and Dave2. I also got to meet many more: Britt & Jared, Heather & Tyler, Finn & Mister, Hilly, Lisa, Karen and Becky. There were some others present, including some kids, but I’m sticking to bloggers (and their spouses) here. Great food and great times!

toojaysSaturday morning’s arrival meant breakfast. I love breakfast. Kim joined several of the dinner attendees (Finn & Mister, Poppy & Dawg, Rachel, Robin and me) at TooJay’s. After breakfast, we discovered that Robin’s rental had some issues and she and Rachel had to go exchange it (after dropping me back at the Hilton, where I wasn’t staying, but had met up beforehand). Bummer that their plans got messed up by having to drive back to the airport, but watching Robin work it on the phone was pretty impressive.

Back at the Hilton, I sat around chatting with various attendees until it was time for a late lunch. Sheila, Employee3699, Fraughter, Nicole and… grumble… I’ve gone and forgotten their names. One other couple. :-( I even tried looking through photos, to no avail. Anyway, we went to Bahama Breeze. I was still full from breakfast, so I didn’t order any lunch and then had a dessert. It was some sort of banana bread-bananas-caramel-ice cream-whip cream concoction that ended up not being as good as I had hoped. Oh, well.

invaded_boxBack to the hotel to get ready for the main event, Avitaween 2009: INVADED!!!! Words fail me, so have a look at the Flickr stream. Okay, I’ll come up with some words. Or one word. Absomazingtastibulous! [Edit: I forgot to mention that there are also a couple of karaoke videos.]

As the festivities were starting to wind down (though plenty of people looked like they’d be there for a while), a group of us decided to head over to Denny’s for post-party, late night food. My steak & egg burrito really hit the spot. Let’s see how well I can recall who was at Denny’s. Poppy & Dawg, Robin, Rachel, Shiela, Kim, Employee3699, Fraughter, Finn & Mister, Karen and Adam‘s friend Chris. I think that’s everyone, but I could be forgetting someone at the other end of the table.

Sunday morning pretty much went by while I slept, which was fine since I had breakfast the night before. Marci and I were able to have lunch with Mike & Susie at Five Guys, and then sit and chat with them for a couple of hours back at the Hilton. Getting to know other people is one of my favorite parts of these trips, so I really appreciated this opportunity.

At that point, we needed to check into our new hotel. We were switching to the hotel where Marci would be spending the rest of the week as she was staying in town for a conference. We were planning to meet up with Marty & Reba, but the way things ended up working out I had dinner with Adam. Just the two of us at Chili’s, where we had a good opportunity to actually have some interesting conversations — no time for that for Adam at his own party, of course!

hard rock orlandoI still needed to meet up with Marty — I had a package for him, plus, he’s state of inebriation at the party pretty much precluded conversations — but I wanted to stop by the Orlando Hard Rock Cafe first. This was a bit of an adventure as it required parking in the Universal Studios parking garage ($3 from 8pm to 10pm) and a bit of a walk. I walked around the restaurant for a bit looking at the various memorabilia, but I didn’t want to spend too long as I wasn’t sure how late Marty wanted to be out. I bought my requisite Hard Rock shirt and headed back to the car.

I finally met Marty at TGI Friday’s where we caught up and I had a much better dessert, a Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream Sundae. And half-price Long Island Iced Teas for Marty!

As I said earlier, my favorite part of these trips is hanging out with other people, so I was thrilled that I had so many different opportunities to do so. Looking forward to the next one. Did someone say something about Vegas in December?!

Hectic

I never seem to make time to blog. I think about it often, but I just don’t do it. I have a number of things I want to write about, but I just never set aside the time to do it. I’ve also thought of several short topics (like this one), but I always feel like they’ll be too lame.

The truth is, I just haven’t made blogging a priority. Here are some things that I’ve been prioritizing above this blog:

  • Work (including some weekend work)
  • Kids’ activities (soccer, swim team, etc.)
  • Kids’ school work (assisting or just pestering them to get it done)
  • Netflix (I always feel pressure to watch and return what I have.)
  • TV (particularly now that the fall season is underway)
  • glass.renagerie.com (my daily photo blog)
  • Macro Monday (technically part of this blog, but gets its own priority)
  • Twitter (I’m embarrassed to admit that I rarely miss any updates in my stream, which is probably an indication that I’m overly attached.)
  • Travel (We’ve done quite a bit of travel over the last couple of years, and I don’t regret it at all. That’s another reason I need to update the budget, though: to include the fact that we’re simply going to spend more on travel than we previously budgeted.)

Of course, blogging isn’t the only thing that suffers neglect. Here are some other things I want or need to do but never seem to accomplish:

  • Tag and rate my photos from previous years (I did most of the tagging a couple of years ago, but I never quite finished so there is a gap of about 12-18 months from 2006 to 2007. Rating is easier, but further behind. I believe I’ve done 1999-2003 and 2008-April, 2009.)
  • Tag, rate and publish my current photos (I’ve yet to do the TequilaCon pics from April, or any since then.)
  • Update our budget (This has been pending for a few months now, though in retrospect, it would have been a waste several months ago due to a lot of unexpected changes when school started. But it does need to be done.)
  • Run (Though, this is also lacking simply because it’s dark in the morning when I would like to run. The extended Daylight Saving Time really puts a damper on my morning runs.)
  • Process video (would be a bigger issue if I hadn’t misplaced our camcorder (HD, about a year old, I think) back in February)
  • Reading (As my aNobii profile shows, I’ve been reading my two current books since April and May, though I’m finally near the end of each of them.)

Wow, that turned out to be a much meatier post than I had expected. Nice. :-)
